Equipement: This is presented as separate sections on equipment of various types (Living History, Pictures). The Viking age was an especially dynamic time period for Scandinavia. The Vikings ranged far and wide and brought exotic wares home from their travels. With their fast ships, good weapons and warlike attitude they were successful on many of their journeys, and at the same time were excellent sailors and traders who had high quality technology and equipment (for those times). This equipment was, in fact, a prerequisite for transport and trading over great distances and the discovery of new continents. The riches they brought home raised their standard of living and the Vikings proudly displayed this in their fine clothing, intricate jewellery and extravagant gifts to family (women) and friends. The Viking world was thus a world of colour, artistic design, and high quality craftmanship. As reenactors, we try to copy the Vikings' art. From (sometimes rare) archaeological finds we try to recreate their dress and equipment. To live with these and use them gives us a lot of information about how life was at that time, and where there is missing information, we make qualified guesses and experiment with the materials the Vikings had access to (see e.g. Widfaran). To make fire with flint and steel, smithing, dyeing, sewing tents, and making tent cloth and clothing waterproof, are just some of the projects we work with, as Viking life, then as well as now, would be somewhat uncomfortable without these skills! In these pages, we would like to give access to our experience and knowledge, so modern Viking life can continue being a colourful, dynamic and aesthetic door to our fantastic past! |
