Widfaran:

Widfaran is from old Anglo-saxon for Far Traveller. It started with making accurate and functional replicas of Viking equipment, and to using them in remote and beautiful wilderness. There was a lot of experimentation with such things as waterproofing at first, but the theme has drifted towards learning how to use things, and what one can manage without.

Widfaran is a project and a contact list and has nothing to do with a number of dubious websites.

Places, Times and Themes:

Expeditions lasting a little less than a week have mostly been in the forests and mountains of Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Because most Viking reenactors have a full schedule in summer, there is usually an autumn, midwinter and early spring trip. These are generally arranged to coincide with the full moon.

Autumn tends to feature overcast, likely rain but only feeble frost. It is the season to find food.
Winter is for playing with snow in various ways. The venue can be pretty close to the arctic circle, so daylight is in rather short supply.
Spring in the far North has, by contrast, a long day, but one can expect chill nights and not a lot of foraging.

Some events have a theme such as hiking between two locations, foraging, using skis (or small boats, or whatever), building Shelters from local materials or even hunting one another.

Fire is Your Best Friend:

A dark and dripping forest can be a comfortable and cheerful place with a fire. No Widfaran fire has ever been lit using modern techniques. On the other hand the environment is under so much strain these days that we have to be especially careful to avoid additional damage. Also, although primitive equipment is generally at least as good as its modern equivalent, it is a really good idea to take such modern emergency items as a phone and a minimal first aid kit.
