Living History:

What are modern people doing with copies of thousand year old clothes, weapons and other equipment?
The simple answer is that we are attempting to bring to life one of the most important periods of Danish history: the time of the Vikings.

It was a frighteningly dynamic time, with voyages of discovery, conquest and plunder, and almost global trade. It was a time of sophisticated technology and art. We try to recreate some of this, based upon those objects that have survived the mill of time.

We travel to markets, trade and exchange knowledge and techniques. We also show things to the public, and attempt to correct some of the common misconceptions about the Vikings. No, Vikings didn't have horned helmets. Yes, Vikings were more than screaming, filthy, and heavily armed barbarians; that was just the impression recorded by a monk with a quill.

Whenever possible we use physical sources, partly because documentary evidence (Adam of Bremen, Ibn Fadlan, etc.) are highly subjective and laced with speculation, and also because there are plenty of archeological finds. We base our experiments on materials, technologies and styles that we know the Vikings used, but rather than always making exact copies, we sometimes create things that haven't been found as yet. As keen experimental archeologists, we sometimes extrapolate a little, but not so far as to enter a fantasy world.
